The U.S. Navy Denim Shawl Jacket first became standard issue for all U.S. Navy recruits in 1902, the garment was originally designed as a pullover but in 1918 was replaced with the button-up front that has become one of the most iconic and sought after vintage military pieces of the period. The shawl collar design is believed to have been inspired by the flap collar of sailor’s Dress Blues, this design feature was an aesthetic consideration but also helped to protect sailors from cold breeze on deck.
This is a Vintage Second World War US Navy Shawl Collar Jacket, crafted from 100% Cotton Denim that has aged beautifully. This one features the buttons used on the third edition issued during the Second World War, which dates this to the late Second World War period.
Used and in good vintage condition with signs of wear and abrasion throughout with discoloration that comes naturally with aged denim. The garment has undergone alteration, with the cuffs having been turned up and there is a professional repair to the right arm (when worn). There is a hole to the back collar measuring 0.5cm x 2.5cm. An iconic garment in remarkable condition for its age of circa 80 years. Freshly steamed and ready for a new owner.
