The British Army Middle-Parka was introduced in the 1953s after the Korean War, when British troops found their Greatcoats were ineffective for the freezing conditions of the Korean winter. To adapt to this, they took inspiration from their American allies, borrowing from the design of the M-51 Fishtail Parka in order to create their extreme-cold weather alternative. The parka was crafted from a green cotton sateen and features a thick fur lining with an adjustable fur lined hood to ensure the warmth of the user.
This is an early example of the British Middle Parka, dated via the internal label to having been produced in 1954 and features the iconic British Military Broad Cross which would be phased out of military garments by the 1980s.
Used and in good vintage condition, with some signs of wear, abrasion and alteration as the cuffs have been snipped so they fit tighter - this was likely done to prevent wind chill up the sleeves of the jacket. On the body of the jacket there are two small holes just above the front hem that measure less than 1cm and there are a few marks to the back of the jacket. Along the hem of the hood there are a few stitch marks where it has been repaired and there is fraying to the drawstrings. Freshly steamed and ready for a new owner.
